Madera Rotary Interact

Thirteen Madera Interact students and seven adult advisers joined our Rotary club in Los Barriles last week to help complete our season's projects. In five short days, they finished painting a girls' albergue in the small pueblo of San Antonio, and contributed to progress made painting a boys' facility. The Madera visitors also participated in the distribution of healthful water filters to individual ranchos in the hills outside San Bartolo, and along with students from our local high school, helped construct recycling barrels made of recycled Topo Chico bottles.

The Interact kids' visit coincided with our local Spring Break and Semana Santa, and Rotary hosted a cross-cultural dinner for a mixed group of two dozen California and Baja teens. The kids mixed easily, and each practiced either Espanol or English on each other. No matter the language, laughter is impossible to mispronounce, and smiles crossed the miles of separation in an instant that night. Proof positive of the lasting impact of the Madera students is now many of our local high school students hope to visit their new found friends in Madera,

Special thanks goes to both the Sunrise and Noon Madera Rotary clubs, without whom this cultural exchange could not have happened. Muchas gracias to the Interact club students of Madera for your tireless work and high spirits. Your efforts were more than simply key to the completion of our projects; your behavior proved you to be the ambassadors of good will and service above self. Wherever we are, you will always be welcome.
