Healthy Water for Healthy Lives

When reduced to the most common of denominators, the basic requirements for healthy, happy lives are reduced to just two; clean air and clean water. Everyone has to breathe and everyone has to hydrate, simply to stay alive. When we breathe contaminated air or drink contaminated water, the quality of our lives suffers in every way possible. The adage is true: Without health, we have nothing. Sin salud, no tenemos nada.

Todo el mundo tiene que respirar y todo el mundo tiene a hidratar, simplemente para sobrevivir. Cuando respiramos aire contaminado o beber agua contaminada, la calidad de nuestra vida sufre en toda forma posible. El adagio es cierto: sin salud no tenemos nada. Sin salud, no tenemos nada.
The need to improve the quality of water in BCS has been clear for too many years. We recently learned there are 2,300 pueblos with100 or less residents in Baja California Sur. Most of the communities with the greatest need to improve their water are located south of La Paz, many in our Los Barriles service area. Working with East Cape Medical Clinic, we have been aware of the need, but what hasn’t been clear was how to address it.
We were introduced to a solution a couple of years ago when a representative of a non-profit organization, Waves4Water, visited Los Barriles. Utilizing a simple but effective design consisting of a five-gallon bucket, some tubes and the filter mechanism, the gravity-feed filtration system is capable of removing most contaminations found on the Baja peninsula. At this time we are awaiting certification of a new filter that will remove even arsenic.
In June, 2015, we decided to request grants from other Rotary clubs in the States to purchase 500 filter systems. Donations have been generous, and we’ve been able to purchase 360 filter systems. To date we’ve distributed 375 systems to individual ranchos in remote areas on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Laguna range. With the help of local volunteers and guides, we meet with communities otherwise not accessible. We find that everyone understands the need for clean water, and when offered an opportunity, everyone is appreciative and pays rapt attention during training.
Another very clear solution to the need for healthful water is simply people who care. Anyone who wishes to participate in the distribution of clean water filtration is welcome.
La necesidad de mejorar la calidad del agua en el BCS ha sido clara durante muchos años. Recientemente hemos aprendido que existen 2.300 pueblos con 100 o menos habitantes en Baja California Sur. La mayoría de las comunidades con mayor necesidad de mejorar sus aguas están situadas al sur de la Ciudad de La Paz, muchos de los Barriles en nuestra área de servicio. Trabajo con East Cape Clínica Médica, hemos sido conscientes de la necesidad, pero ¿qué no ha sido claro era cómo abordarlo.
Nos presentaron a una solución hace un par de años, cuando un representante de una organización sin fines de lucro, ondas4Agua, visitó los barriles. Utilizando un diseño simple pero eficaz que consta de un cinco-galón el cubo, algunos tubos y el mecanismo de filtro, el sistema de alimentación por gravedad filtración es capaz de remover la mayoría de contaminantes encontrados en la península de Baja California. En este momento estamos a la espera de la certificación de un nuevo filtro que eliminará incluso arsénico.
En junio de 2015, hemos decidido solicitar subsidios de otros clubes rotarios en los Estados Unidos para la compra de 500 sistemas de filtro. Las donaciones han sido generosos, y hemos sido capaces de adquirir 360 sistemas de filtración. Hasta la fecha hemos distribuido 375 Sistemas individuales a los ranchos en zonas remotas en la ladera oriental de la sierra gama Laguna.
